Ancient teachings across cultures often emphasized the importance of paying attention to one's dreams. Dreams were considered sources of guidance, reflection, and self-discovery. In many cases, individuals would seek out shamans, priests, or wise individuals to interpret their dreams, as these interpretations were believed to hold valuable insights into one's life, health, and destiny.
But lucid dreams are more than mere play or introspection; they have been celebrated throughout history by various cultures as a connection to the divine and a means of spiritual exploration. In such dreams, the dreamer may find themselves in sacred landscapes, conversing with wise entities, or experiencing a profound sense of oneness with the universe.
Ancient Egyptians believed dreams were divine messages, often interpreted by priests. Native Americans saw dreams as connections to the spirit world, using dreamcatchers to filter out negativity. Greeks and Romans had differing views, with Greeks seeing dreams as natural and Romans as divine. In Hinduism, dreams reflect the subconscious and past lives. Chinese culture values dreams for hidden truths, while Indigenous Australians access the Dreamtime for spiritual connections.
While the specific beliefs and interpretations of dreams varied widely among ancient cultures, they shared a common thread of seeing dreams as a bridge between the material and spiritual worlds, offering glimpses into the mysteries of the human psyche and the cosmos.
Oneironautics is the practice of navigating dreams.
